The National Testing Agency (NTA), with approval from the Government of India, has officially cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination following serious allegations of a question paper leak.
The exam, which was originally conducted on May 3, was scrapped to maintain the transparency, fairness, and credibility of the national examination system.
CBI Investigation and Re-examination
In response to investigative findings shared by law enforcement and central agencies, the government has referred the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a comprehensive inquiry.
The NTA has pledged full cooperation with the CBI, providing all necessary records and assistance to uncover the truth behind the irregularities.
Lakhs of medical aspirants affected by this decision will not need to register again for the re-conducted exam. The NTA confirmed that:
Existing candidate details and chosen exam centers will be carried forward.
No additional examination fees will be charged.
Fees already paid by candidates for the initial cycle will be refunded.
New dates for the examination and re-issued admit cards will be announced soon via official channels.
Political Fallout and Ministerial Silence
The cancellation has ignited a nationwide political storm, with opposition parties and student groups demanding accountability.
While Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had previously maintained that the exam was conducted fairly, he notably avoided media questions on Tuesday.
When approached by journalists regarding the leak and the subsequent cancellation, the Minister refrained from commenting and walked away, deepening the public debate surrounding the integrity of national entrance tests.
The NTA has urged students and parents to rely solely on official communications and disregard unverified social media reports during this period of uncertainty.
